The New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute is pleased to announce the first $1,000 Edward H. Knight, M.D., Memorial Prize in Applied Psychoanalysis for papers focusing on cultural and cross-cultural studies and their psychoanalytic relevance. The prize will be awarded every three years.

Dr. Edward H. Knight, Training Analyst Emeritus served as President of the Institute, chairman of its Education Committee, supervisor and teacher, and informal mentor of many generations of candidates. He established an interdisciplinary workshop in Applied Analysis for the Institute and the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Society at which work in progress as well as finished papers were presented by members from fields of psychoanalysis, the humanities, and the social sciences. He had a particular interest in the Aztec and Mayan cultures and made trips to Mexico to learn more about them.

Papers should not exceed 40 double-spaced pages (about 11,000 words), exclusive of references and bibliographical material. All artwork, including tables, figures, drawings, and photographs, is to be submitted either as photographic slides or in a format that can be reproduced as a print-resolution graphical file. The entries should not have been previously published or submitted for publication.

The Edward H. Knight, M.D., Memorial Prize is open to psychoanalytic candidates and psychotherapy students at institutes accredited by the American Psychoanalytic Association. It is also open to psychoanalytic candidates and psychotherapy students at independent institutes accredited by the International Psychoanalytic Association located in the United States. The status of candidate or student is required at the time of submission, but graduation prior to announcement of the winner is permitted.

The winning applicant will be awarded the Edward H. Knight, M.D., Memorial Prize of $1,000. The award will be presented to the winner at the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute, where the winner will present his/her paper at a meeting that will be open to the public.

The judges will begin accepting submissions now. The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2005. Applicants will be informed of the results of the contest by January 1, 2006. The winning applicant will present his/her paper in the spring of 2006. Late entries can be entered in the next competition.

Five copies of each paper and a disc file, preferably in Microsoft Word, should be sent to
