Mission Statement and History of the Foundation
The idea of establishing a Foundation to support educational programs as well as providing a variety of services to the community, educational opportunities for those interested in pursuing psychoanalytic knowledge and assisting in research in the area of psychoanalysis had been discussed for a number of years but did not become a reality until March, 1998. Harvey Rich, M.D., now Past President of the American Psychoanalytic Foundation agreed to come to New Orleans to address the faculty and candidates during our annual faculty retreat. After a fruitful discussion of the issues a decision to embark in the establishment of a Foundation was reached. The New Orleans Psychoanalytic Foundation was duly incorporated and registered with the Secretary of State in Louisiana. The Foundation was granted the tax-free status 501 (C) (3) by the Internal Revenue Service. The financial
sources of the Foundation initially came from members, candidates and
faculty of the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute and Society. More
recently support is being received from the community at large. Fundraising
activities and programs have taken place with plans for additional such
activities in the future. We believe the Foundation's viability is essential
for the survival of psychoanalysis in the community and hope that the
community will continue to respond generously.
