Adult Psychoanalytic Training
Curriculum

The curriculum of the Institute consists of a) training analysis, b) theoretical instruction and clinical seminars, and c) supervised clinical work.

a) The training analysis is the foundation of the curriculum. Its objectives do not differ from those of a personal analysis, but it has the additional aim of freeing the analysand from personality traits which would interfere with the ability to conduct psychoanalytic treatment. Because its duration will reflect the personal needs of the particular candidate, no rule can be set down for the length of a training analysis. Experience indicates that more than three hundred hours of analysis (the minimum set forth by the American Psychoanalytic Association) are generally necessary. A frequency of five times a week is recommended.

b) Theoretical instruction is offered in the form of lectures and seminars covering the theory and technique of psychoanalysis and its application to psychiatry and related fields. The form in which theoretical instruction is presented is flexible and will, in each case, be adapted to the content of the course. Admission to any course is subject to approval by the Education Committee.

c) Supervision aims to facilitate the candidate's objectivity by helping him/her to recognize any personal problems that interfere with analytic work. It also allows the candidate to assess his/her ability to apply the material from didactic courses to the conduct of an analysis. Additionally, supervision provides both the faculty and the candidate an opportunity to evaluate the candidate's progress. The supervisor of a candidate's first case determines when the candidate may undertake a second analytic case. Satisfactory completion of a mid-point colloquium results in eligibility for a third and subsequent cases.
