Howard Osofsky, M.D., Ph.D., is the Kathleen and John Bricker Chair and Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at LSU Health Sciences Center, a position he has held since 1986. Dr. Osofsky graduated from New York State College of Medicine, Syracuse, New York in 1958. He completed an Internship in Surgery, Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA, and then completed a residency in OB/GYN at that hospital in1963, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Osofsky subsequently returned to Syracuse University to pursue a doctorate in Psychology, which he attained in 1974. He completed a fellowship and psychiatric residency training at The Menninger School of Psychiatry in 1979, followed by Psychoanalytic training at The Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, graduating in 1982. He was invited to join the Menninger's faculty and subsequently was promoted to Chief of Psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation in 1984. He accepted the Chairmanship of the LSU Health Sciences Center's Department of Psychiatry and moved his family to New Orleans in 1986. Dr. Osofsky has received board certification from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and from the American Psychoanalytic Association. He has served the American Psychoanalytic Association since 1993 on the Committee on Research and Special Training and as a member of the Fund for Psychoanalytic Research Committee. He has held the position of Teaching Analyst at the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute since 1986. Dr. Osofsky is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the American College of Psychiatrists, and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry. He is the author or editor of several books and has written or co-authored more than 90 papers. Dr. Osofsky has become especially well known for his role in developing programs for high-risk individuals across the life cycle based on his interest in the two major areas of: 1) education for high risk groups including the elderly, welfare recipients and other low income individuals, including training individuals receiving welfare assistance and others for careers in mental health and corrections; and, 2) violence intervention/ diversionary programs for children and youth. Many of the programs that he has developed have come to serve as national models. Since 1990, several significant grant supported programs have been initiated in which Dr. Osofsky served as principal investigator (PI) or co-principal investigator:
Locally
he has received recognition from the New Orleans Police Foundation
related to mental health evaluations of prospective NOPD recruits,
their "Badge of Honor" Award in recognition of outstanding
commitment to rebuilding the strength of the New Orleans Police Department.
And most recently, he received the Orleans Parish Medical Society's
Award for Outstanding Excellence in Public Service/Public Education.
Nationally, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
honored him with their first award for the "Best Chair of a Department
of Psychiatry" because of his numerous efforts on behalf of children
and adolescents.
