Joy D. Osofsky, Ph.D. is a psychologist and psychoanalyst who is Professor of Public Health, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of New Orleans. She is on the faculty of the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Osofsky is Director of the Violence Intervention Program for Children and Families and the Harris Center for Infant Mental Health in New Orleans. She is editor of Children in a Violent Society (Wiley, 1997; paper, 1998), two editions of the Handbook of Infant Development (Wiley, 1979; 1987), and most recently, co-editor of the four volume WAIMH Handbook of Infant Mental Health that received the American Publishers Association award as the best social science reference book in 2000. She is also co-editor of Hurt, Healing, and Hope: Caring for Infants and Toddlers in Violent Environments, and Islands of Safety: Assessing and Treating Young Victims of Violence, and Protecting Young Children in Violent Environments: Building Staff and Community Strengths (Zero to Three, National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families, 1994, 1996, 2000). In 1995, she published an article, "The Effects of Violence Exposure in Young Children" (American Psychologist, 1995) that was chosen by the American Psychological Association as one of the top articles published in this journal in the past 50 years. She
is Past-President of the World Association for Infant Mental Health,
on the Research Committee of the International Psychoanalytic Association,
and is Vice President on the Board of Directors of Zero to Three:
National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families. Dr. Osofsky has
conducted research, intervention, and clinical work with infants,
children, and families at high psychosocial risk including adolescent
mothers, and infants, children, and families exposed to violence.
In 1998, she was awarded the Badge of Honor by the New Orleans Police
Foundation for her work with children and families exposed to violence.
