Vann Spruiell, MD graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1952 and continued his education as an intern at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, as a resident at Cornell Medical School and as a fellow at Tulane University Medical School. He received his psychoanalytic training at the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute graduating in 1965.

Professionally Dr. Spruiell has held teaching positions at the Cornell, Tulane, and LSU Medical Schools, as well as participating in the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic research as a visiting researcher. He has taught at the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute since 1970 and has been and continues to hold the position of training and supervising analyst. He has also held positions on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Quarterly, the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, International Journal of Psycho-Analysis and International Review of Psychoanalysis, and the Psychoanalytic Glossary and Compendium.

An active member of professional organizations, some of Dr. Spruiell's duties in organizations have included holding the offices of President of the Louisiana Group Psychotherapy Association in 1958, President of the New Orleans Area Psychiatric Association in 1967, Fellow on the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 1975-1979 and 1983-1990, President of the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute from 1985-1989 and a position on the Board of Trustees of the Psychoanalytic Studies in Aspen from 1984 to the present.

Dr. Spruiell has received numerous honors and awards including Best Doctors in America from 1992 to present, Marquis Who's Who in the South and Southwest, 1994-present, Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care, 1997-present and Marquis Who's Who in the World from 1998-present.

Dr. Spruiell has authored over 45 articles and been the speaker of over 40 major presentations, some of the more recent include presenting as a panel discussant on "Who Maps Psychic Reality?" at the International Psychoanalytic Association meeting in San Francisco in 1995 and in 1993 Discussion of Ernest Kafka's , "Repression promotes inhibition and unconscious gratification, two aspects of a single phenomenon", in honor of Martin Stein at the winter meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
