Training & Education
The purpose of the Institute is to teach the theory and practice of psychoanalysis to qualified candidates. It offers a complete program for professional training in this field. The Institute encourages research in the science of psychoanalysis, and it promotes mental health in the community. Graduates of the Institute are engaged in the practice and teaching of psychoanalysis in many states. Candidates who have been accepted for full training in our Institute are eligible for Affiliate Membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. Candidates in full training who graduate and are Affiliate Members will automatically become Active Members at the following meeting of the Association. Graduates of our Institute are eligible to apply to the American for certification in psychoanalysis. Graduates are also eligible for membership in the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Society. The Institute also offers New Orleans Psychoanalytic candidates the opportunity for integrated training in both adult and child/adolescent analysis. A candidate may begin the analysis of a child after having an established adult case in supervision and upon the recommendations of the Child Analysis Committee and approval of the Education Committee. In addition the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute offers a program in Studies in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. The program is designed for professionals who want to enhance their theoretical understanding of psychoanalytic principals in their work with adults to improve their skill in conducting intensive psychotherapy. The continuing education program offered by the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute promotes and provides study groups for faculty of the Institute as well as for advanced candidates. The facilities and faculty are also available to psychiatry residents of Louisiana State University Medical Centers in New Orleans and Shreveport and Tulane School of Medicine for teaching and supervision.
